Teaching Kindergarten Outside
This year I am trying out a new "Forest Schooling program" with the kindergarten children. It all started last year when I took my students outdoors for a full day to celebrate Earth Day. When I noticed how beneficial it seemed for the students to have structured and unstructured time in nature, I decided to research the benefits and challenges of teaching children outdoors. It turns out that forest, or nature school, has been going on for a long time in Europe and now in Canada. Outdoor learning is very complementary to the Yukon curriculum. We have been observing the seasons change before our very eyes and quietly observed beavers, otters, swans, squirrels and foxes in their habitat, getting ready for winter. We never know what our woods will teach us next, as there are so many learning opportunities, but there is always a new lesson everyday! We will keep you posted.
